The adequacy of police search efforts for Canberra man Andrew Seton, who was an experienced skier missing in the NSW Snowy Mountains, is at the centre of the coronial inquest into his death.

A coronial inquest into the adequacy of the police search for skier Andrew Seton is underway. An inquest into the death of a skier in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains has heard the search for him did not begin for more than a day after his mother alerted emergency services that he had not returned from a backcountry ski trip.

The opening day of the inquest in the NSW Coroners Court at Lidcombe heard Mr Seton had set off on solo backcountry ski trip two days earlier and was meant to return to his car at Guthega the same day. "That wasn't negotiable. It was always the done thing, it was never missed," she told the court via audio-visual link.

Andrew Seton's body was located on the afternoon of September 5, after a multi-agency search began that morning.Mr Harris told the court that the "experienced and proficient" skier's autopsy showed he had suffered severe head injuries, consistent with a fall.Backcountry skier John Klempfner told the court his friend Mr Seton prioritised safety and had decided on previous occasions not to ski at Watson's Crags.

"I'm a little surprised that the fact that PLB did not get activated did not get serious attention," he said. Secret Service director Kim Cheatle once said she 'thrives on chaos'. An assassination attempt puts that claim to the test
