A coronial inquest into the death of a 17-year-old Aboriginal girl in Central Victoria is investigating the adequacy and responsiveness of the state's child protection services.
The 17-year-old Bendigo girl had seven placements over four yearsThe girl, who can only be referred to as XY, took her own life on July 18, 2021.
"Many of these were short-term and ultimately inappropriate for her needs," lawyer Karen Argiropoulos said. Police repeatedly referred XY to the Centre Against Sexual Assault , which reported a three-month, then later a six-month wait for its counselling service. This was echoed by XY in December 2020, when she wrote a letter to child protection, Anglicare Victoria and Bendigo District Aboriginal Corporation , claiming the service was not supporting her.XY asked for support to connect with her Aboriginal heritage, family and community."I do not feel supported by you. I do not feel like you have my best interests at heart," she said of child protection.
It will also investigate the adequacy of Victoria Police's response to XY, following disclosures of sexual abuse and the adequacy of the response to her attempted suicides and self-harm episodes.
