The barrister for a woman whose husband died by poisoning has vehemently rejected rumour and innuendo that her client killed him.
An inquest into the poisoning death of an Upper Hunter farmer has heard his second wife had no motive to kill him.
No strychnine was found at the Thrift family farm until 2023 — located in a shed more than four years after he died., counsel assisting Rob Ranken said either Mr Thrift unintentionally consumed strychnine by accident, intentionally consumed it to end his life, or that it was administered to him by a third party without his consent.
Earlier on Wednesday, expert forensic toxicologist Dimitri Gerostamoulos said food and drink could be laced with the bitter-tasting strychnine. "There is no evidence it was himself who voluntarily consumed it and that that alcohol in his system was not administered by a third party by way of concealing the poison strychnine," she said.Jane Thrift was the last to see her husband alive, but police officer in charge Detective Sergeant Peter Davis said there was no new evidence or information to suggest she had anything to do with her husband's demise.
