The Indigenous boy, who authorities have confirmed had done nothing wrong, was dragged kicking and screaming from a house and placed into the cage of the vehicle by police officers.
abc.net.au/news/inquiries-after-indigenous-boy-11-put-in-nt-police-paddy-wagon/102884196Northern Territory children's advocates are seeking answers over why an 11-year-old boy who did nothing wrong was dragged kicking and screaming from a home and placed into the cage of a police paddy wagon.
Authorities have been tight-lipped on the exact reasons for the child's removal, however they have confirmed it was a child welfare case, and that the child was not accused of any misbehaviour. "My focus [will] be on what could've been the alternative situation to having the need to escort a child using police into the back of a paddy wagon, and not necessarily another government-issued vehicle to move the child to a safe place, if that was the intent.
National Indigenous children's advocacy body the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care called the use of a police van inappropriate, and said different options should have been considered at the time.Catherine Liddle is calling for a response from Territory Families and NT Police."Something has gone fundamentally wrong, and it has gone wrong on a number of different levels.
