ABC NEWS has been given rare access to two of the country's little-known free private schools that exist to serve disadvantaged students.

Australia has about 100 Special Assistance Schools , which are free private schools for disadvantaged kids at risk of missing out on an education.

Known as the "the poor man's Earl", Lord Shaftesbury's mission still burns brightly on the sprawling green hills of Arethusa College in Deception Bay, north of Brisbane. Now caught up on his learning, Jake's planning for a future as a policeman or emergency health worker."They don't just treat me like I'm an invisible person."

Spread over several floors in a modern commercial building, it is tightly regimented with a longer school day to maximise catch-up time."If you're illiterate or innumerate your life outcomes are just so much more diminished," Principal Sharyn Angel said.MSA recently became the first school in the world to receive all three major prizes at the US-based National Institute for Direct Instruction Excellence in Education Awards.

She is still waiting on her English results but has just found out she has caught up on three years of lost learning in maths in a single year.
