Inside ‘Eddie Week’ and why it meant so much to the Randwick faithful | tomdecent
On Tuesday morning, a man walked his dog smack-bang through the middle of the England rugby team’s training session at Coogee Oval.
“The younger players don’t know who Poido is,” Jones said this week. “They just think he’s some pretty fit old guy with a dog.” While the extra attention and symbolism of this week cannot be ignored, Jones’ primary focus will be helping England beat Australia in the third and deciding Test.Eddie Jones was a keen observer at Randwick training on Thursday night at Latham Park.Sure, another series victory against the team he coached from 2001 to 2005 would be mighty rewarding, but Jones is equally intent on being able to visit his elderly mother. He couldn’t have crammed more into this week if he tried.
“It seems like it’s done him the world of good to get back to people who are really proud of what he’s done.”On Tuesday evening, about 100 rugby folk with myrtle green running through their veins gathered at the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club for a cocktail party to celebrate Jones’ vast achievements and his life membership from the club.As platters of sushi and schnitzel rolls made their way around the room, Randwick’s greatest unofficial ambassador mingled with mates he hadn’t seen for years.
It was fitting that the event – featuring “a lot of bullshit and laughter” – was at the same venue where Sayle and esteemed Wallabies coach Bob Dwyer took the Randwick team for a pep talk before their 1988 clash against the All Blacks at Coogee Oval.
