F1: Former world champion Jacques Villeneuve questions why Daniel Ricciardo currently has a seat on the grid ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix.

Formula 1 loves a good feud, and at the weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix F1 was treated to the latest chapter in its most baffling beef.

“Maybe you make that effort for Lewis Hamilton, who’s won multiple championships; you don’t make that effort for a driver that can’t cut it. “Then he was beating for half a season Verstappen when Verstappen was 18 years old, just starting.“I think his image has kept him in F1 more than his actual results.”

Yet while Villeneuve has a reputation as one of the paddock’s most outspoken and opinionated personalities — a brand he’s only leant into as a pundit provocateur — there’s little doubt Ricciardo has been regularly singled out for a spray.that Ricciardo “doesn’t bring in any points and he doesn’t have the speed needs to develop the car, so he’s just costing them money.

“He did some political background work with that didn’t see coming, well done,” he told French broadcaster Canal+. “Ultimately even against Tsunoda he doesn’t do brilliantly. But he brings value to F1 and that’s why he is there. The first was 2015, when Daniil Kvyat beat him by three points in the team’s least competitive campaign since 2008.

The team bosses gather at the end of every year in a secret ballot to rate the grid. Ricciardo was comfortably in the top 10 from 2014 to 2020, including even his less renowned first season at Renault in 2019.Villeneuve might argue that his opinion differs as a former driver, but Ricciardo was rated similarly highly in the annual driver’s driver poll run by the F1 website since 2018.

And despite Villeneuve’s insistence that the Aussie is putting it all on the team to deliver him a better car, Ricciardo himself has said he’s been intensely self-critical in search of regular high-quality performances.
