The Princess of Wales underwent abdominal surgery in mid-January and was always expected to be away from royal duties until at least Easter - but her road to recovery has been far from smooth.

Kate Middleton's recovery from surgery has been far from smooth, with the Princess of Wales having to navigate cruel rumours and a breach of her private medical records along the way. After undergoing abdominal surgery in mid-January, it was confirmed that Kate would be away from royal duties until at least Easter.

Kate appeared to have reached a milestone early on in her recovery when she was released after two weeks from London Clinic and was allowed to go back home to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor. Kensington Palace confirmed that the princess had left the clinic, saying she was showing "good progress" in her journey back to health and wished to say "a huge thank you to the entire team at The London Clinic, especially the dedicated nursing staff, for the care they have provided".

'Doing well' At the end of February, there was news about Kate's health after Prince William missed a royal event at Windsor Castle for a 'personal matter'. Despite a photo appearing of Kate, 42, being driven by her mum Carole Middleton in her first public sighting since surgery, cruel rumours have continued to circulate. The palace then criticised the "madness of social media" after weeks of often unkind and unfounded theories about possible reasons for Kate's prolonged break from royal duties.

Ekin-Su then said: "I've heard mixed things about Kate and I don't want to make a comment, but whatever it is, do you want her to come back? " to which he responded: "She'll be back, of course she will." Later on, Kate publicly accepted the blame for the edited family photo when it was published. She then personally apologised for the 'confusion'.

Nelson Silva, who saw Kate and William, told TMZ: "I noticed a couple choosing loaves of bread and the woman turned her face and I felt like I had seen the face before. It was familiar. I went to my car and as they came out of the shop I just filmed them. I think they walked out through a gate out of the grounds. They just vanished and I didn't see a car.
