The NSW coach has called on past glories to inspire his team for the 2024 State of Origin series.
When Steve Mortimer sank to his knees at full-time in 1985’s second State of Origin match and kissed the muddy SCG ground, it symbolised his passion for his state and his code after leading NSW to their first series win.
The meticulous Maguire worked on the presentation for more than a month, deliberately choosing what he described as a “back to the future” theme in seeking to evoke pride in the Blues jumper.Fairfax Media/Bethany Rae Queensland had thrived on this deep fealty to their home state since that inaugural game when their captain Arthur Beetson clashed with his Parramatta teammate, NSW’s Mick Cronin.
He has selected four forwards on the bench, which is both a signal of how he intends the game to be played and also an indication of the Blues’ vulnerability.
