Artists Bill Henson and Louise Hearman have turned the building that houses their studios and living quarters into an intriguing sanctuary.
Bill Henson and Louise Hearman live in a horse stable turned mechanic’s workshop turned artists’ haven in the hipsterfied Melbourne suburb of Northcote. The monolithic red brick 19th-century structure is at the end of an unassuming cul-de-sac, and entry is via a private cobblestone laneway shielded from the outside world by a massive iron and wire gate.
“It was essentially sections of rusting corrugated iron roof tacked onto some very old, diesel- and dust-encrusted beams,” says Henson. “And on a windy day, the roof breathed in and out like a lung.” Despite the cultural high jinks that go on in their home, Henson insists that “if we made an escutcheon or a coat of arms for this place, across the bottom rather than a bit of Latin, we’d have something like ‘cosy, cosy, cosy’.”
“I prefer things that don’t have too many of those ‘wicked witch’ curlicues that the Victorians used to add to everything,” Henson notes. “Slightly simpler things that takes you back to colonial cedar, and particularly to government-commissioned cabinets and tables because they’re all quite elegant and well-proportioned.”
