Lolipops is the perfect blend of modern and traditional in more ways than one
Throughout the ages, sweetshops have always been a key part of every community, big or small and while trends and looks change constantly, the core of a sweetshop never does. In Penwortham, just off the main in a colourful looking shop covered in rainbows, swirls and quirky designs that are hard to miss.
The layout of the shop is incredibly bright and airy and you can see almost everything on display right from the door. A huge stripy counter with weighing scales, jars of sweets and rows of treats welcomes you into the store, accompanied by a very smiley and friendly member of staff. One huge thing for me is the options of sweets. As a gelatine-free sweet eater I find more times than none, sweetshops didn't cater for me and as a child I always avoided pick and mix stands knowing there would be the odd few sweets I could choose from.
At the back of the iconic black and white checkerboard floor is an ice cream stand stocked with Mrs Dowson's local ice cream and bags of toppings and sauces to choose from. Another step to the right and you're in American Candyland heaven. Next to the American sweets are huge bags of pre packed pick and mix- perfect for gifting or just to save yourself the dread of not knowing how much pick and mix you popped into your own bag. The bags are yet again inclusive to all with vegan mixes, sour mixes, gummy mixes and a bit of everything mixes.
