Police in Australia say they've received a number of 'virtual kidnapping' reports — a scam which has in some cases extorted tens of thousands of dollars from the families of victims.

There are fresh reports of a scam targeting Chinese international students in a bid to extort money from them.

Scammers are "virtually kidnapping" Chinese international students in a bid to extort money from their families, police say. He said they can be "both random and targeted", and typically start with a cold call to "young, international Chinese students". "The victims are coerced into faking their own kidnapping, taking photos of themselves in vulnerable positions and sending those photographs to their families in China and seeking that the family pay a ransom for their release," Superintendent Doueihi said.
