The Western Australia government has revealed how it is 'shamelessly trying to steal' the best people from the United Kingdom and Ireland as it tries to fill 31,000 job vacancies, including for police officers and teachers.
The state's police and defence industry minister Paul Papalia will head to Europe later this month on a mission to sell the dream of working and living in Western Australia.
The government wants to build a pipeline of workers with almost 31,000 vacancies waiting to be filled. "I am shamelessly trying to steal their best people, there's no question to that," he told reporters on Friday. "I'm also going to be honest and say that I'll be actively provoking some of the locals in terms of politicians and other people who might not want us to steal their best people.
"And by comparison with what's going on now, what's confronting people in the UK and Ireland, it looks like nirvana and it really is," Mr Papalia said.
