'This is a very unfair trial, and I hope the public is watching,' Donald Trump told a frustrated judge yesterday. They were telling words, giving an insight into a courtroom strategy few defendants would dare to employ.

How does one control a former president of the United States? With great difficulty, a judge discovered in a New York court this week.

He has managed to turn the civil case – in which he stands accused of fraudulently inflating his wealth to get better deals from banks and insurers – into an extraordinary public relations exercise. Judge Arthur Engoron tried to rein him in. "This is not a political rally," he said at one point. "Can you control your client?" he asked Trump's lawyer, Christopher Kise.

For much of the time on the stand, Trump spruiked the value of his name. He argued the financial statements at the heart of the case were "conservative" because they put no valuation on the Trump "brand".One of his repeated claims is that this trial is political persecution.
