Sydney and the NSW coastline are bracing for intense rainfall and possible life-threatening floods. The Bureau of Meteorology warns of heavy rain and damaging winds, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel. An inland low and coastal trough are expected to bring significant rainfall to the region.

Intense rainfall and possible life-threatening floods are expected to lash Sydney and 450km of the NSW coastline. The Bureau of Meteorology's Helen Reid said there is around 126.5mm of rainfall in an average April. Since 9am yesterday morning, there has been 106mm of rain and it could surpass the April average, she said. Residents of Sydney and surrounding areas are being urged to stay indoors as damaging winds and heavy rain sweep through, causing life-threatening flash flooding .

3 per cent full on Friday morning. The ongoing intense downpours could lead to "dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding" from Friday evening, NSW's State Emergency Service warned. The SES is urging residents of Sydney, Gosford, Wollongong, Nowra, Batemans Bay and Goulburn to "stay indoors" due to the dangerous weather. The agency responded to 552 incidents in the 24 hours to 5am on Friday, including seven flood rescues.
