Transgender women have been banned from competing in women’s events under the control of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

The organisation announced on Monday that transgender players would no longer be allowed in the women’s events until an assessment of their gender was completed, which could take two years.

FIDE’s decision allows transgender players to compete in an open category of tournaments but it insisted the two-year timeline to analyse gender “seemed reasonable” to create a new policy “without rushing it”. World Athletics, Basketball Australia and World Aquatics are among the sports to ban transgender women from competing against women because of the physical advantages.

Yosha Iglesias, a transgender woman professional chess player with the FIDE rank of chess master, also slammed the rule change saying it would change the game for future players.
