International students are reporting a range of negative experiences, including overt racism and bias against them in the classroom. The Australian Human Rights Commission is preparing its final report on the prevalence and impact of racism in the country's universities.
Yee Von Teo moved to Hobart as an international student 10 years ago, and says she's been subjected to racist remarks ever since she arrived.
"I remember after hearing the news, I felt scared to even walk with friends or my partner at night because you never know," Ms Teo said.Australia has the second-highest share of international students in the world, behind Luxembourg.Australia's Race Discrimination Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman said they deserved to be treated fairly.
"There is overt racism, like derogatory language or racist attitudes, or bias regarding academic proficiency."The 24-year-old said he had faced discrimination in the classroom. "It was actually by a child who was not even my younger brother's age, so that actually emotionally impacted me in a different way as I did not expect ," he said.Mr Sivaraman said international students commonly felt worried about reporting incidents of racism, because they feared it could compromise their visas and lead to deportation.
