Gov. Phil Murphy signed the bipartisan legislation on Tuesday.
signed legislation Tuesday that protects the right to marry someone of a different race in New Jersey, a move prompted by the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling last year that overturned the constitutional right to an abortion under Roe v. Wade.
In a statement, Murphy said New Jersey “will continue to stand on the right side of history, ensuring that people have the freedom to marry the person they love.” In a 1967 ruling in Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court ruled that state laws banning interracial marriage were unconstitutional. Prior to that ruling, dozens of states prohibited blacks and whites from marrying each other.
