A Watch and Act alert remains in place for the fire, which has burnt an area of land roughly five times the size of the ACT, and is raging to the east of the town.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Shenah Gamble said the conditions were set to ease in the coming days, before returning mid next week.

"As we look ahead, over the next week, we will see those winds drop off further in terms of the strength and tend more northerly over the end of the weekend and into next week," she said. Back-burning operations began south-east of Tennant Creek as a precautionary measure on Wednesday night."Take all necessary precautions if you suffer from medical conditions that may be exacerbated by bushfire smoke."Bushfires NT chief fire controller Tony Fuller on Tuesday afternoon said an outstation near Tennant Creek was "under threat", with police looking to evacuate residents.

"Depending on what activities get undertaken today, it may come pretty close to Tennant Creek itself," he said.Crews were also assisting residents of the Epenarra and Canteen Creek remote communities, located south-east of Tennant Creek, according to a statement from Bushfires NT.
