An investigation underway into incident on Israel-bound flight; British Prime Minister Andy Burnham claims Iranian involvement in suspicious activity at a UK airbase; Nathan Cleary takes out the NRL's Dally M Medal. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham claims Iranian involvement in suspicious activity at a UK airbase. A co-pilot on a commercial flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv has attempted to crash the plane, after stabbing the captain, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Passengers on the flight, which was carrying at least 150 people, attempted to break into the cockpit after the flight entered a "tailspin", Mr Netanyahu says. The flydubai flight - a sister airline of Emirates - was eventually diverted and landed safely at Tabuk Airport in northwest Saudi Arabia, after air traffic control received a distress call. The Israeli PM says the majority of passengers on the flight were Israeli, with an investigation now underway into the incident.
"I spoke with one of the Israeli passengers ... he told me that, against all odds, he managed to break into the cockpit with one of the crew members, and together they neutralised, the stabbing pilot, while he was trying to sabotage the plane's systems. Additional aircrew members on the plane entered the cockpit and managed to stabiliase the aircraft. I salute these heroes who showed exceptional resourcefulness and courage. They saved many lives and prevented a major disaster.
"British Prime Minister Andy Burnham says the UK has strong indications Iran was involved in suspicious activity at a U-K airbase that triggered a major security incident at the weekend. Five men have been released on bail after they were arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences near a US-run military air base in Gloucestershire , which has been used by American bombers striking Iran.
Police say on Tuesday no explosives were found at the scene, and officials have not explained the nature of the threat. Mr Burnham says an investigation is underway into how and why the men and three vans were near the perimeter of the base.
"There is indeed a strong indication that Iran played a part. This remains, though, a complex and very serious police investigation, so I can't say any more at this stage. We have been waiting to confirm what we could say, but we can now confirm our belief that Iran played a part. I will update people more in due course.
" Iran's embassy in London says it "categorically rejects and strongly condemns" speculation it was involved in the incident. Thirteen people have been sentenced to prison terms of up to 10 years over the sinking of a boat in the English Channel nearly five years ago. 31 migrants, most of whom were Iraqi Kurds, died in November 2021 when their boat sank while trying to make the dangerous crossing.
Fourteen people, including two who remain at large, and one who has been acquitted, had been on trial in September. They were accused of organising the crossing of a small boat that was unfit for navigation on the open sea, was overloaded and lacked appropriate life jackets. Authorities in Fiji are conducting a full audit of exhibits after the theft of cocaine bricks that could be worth more than $20 million.
Fiji's Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu says it is not the only batch of drugs to go missing from the High Court evidence room, conceding nearly 13 kilograms of cocaine seized in 2018 from Australian horse trainer John Nikolic's yacht has also vanished. Senior Superintendent of Fiji Police Peni Tuivaga says early inquiries have established some of the CCTV at the courthouse was not working, and some security measures were faulty when the heist took place.
"We have identified six persons of interest, and investigators are in process of evidence and documentary gathering, and also launch financial investigation with the help of Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit. The investigation team have recorded statements from 37 individuals as they tried to piece together the information on those that had direct access to the exhibits.
"Panthers star Nathan Cleary has taken out the NRL's Dally M Medal, which he accepted from home, after being released from hospital following surgery on a broken ankle. Cleary finished 14 points clear of Cronulla half Braydon Trindall, who was in the hunt until a dislocated shoulder ended his regular season. Tamika Upton claimed her third Dally M Medal as NRLW player of the year, defending her crown from last year.
Andrew Webster from the Warriors is coach of the year while Canberra's Ethan Sanders is rookie of the year. South Sydney's Jai Arrow was presented the Peter Frilingos headline moment and the Provan-Summons spirit of the game award for the way he has approached his battle with motor neurone disease.
