Multiple investigations have been launched into allegations a Northern Territory schoolteacher crashed a school vehicle on Groote Eylandt, killing a student.

The Northern Territory's workplace watchdog has confirmed it's investigating how an allegedly unlicensed schoolteacher may have come to be driving a school vehicle that subsequently crashed on Groote Eylandt, killing a 10-year-old student.

At the time of the crash, NT Police released a statement that said the boy was one of "several children travelling in a Toyota four-wheel-drive that rolled off-road". Ian De Silva was working as an Angurugu School teacher when he allegedly crashed a car, killing a student, on December 10."NT WorkSafe was notified of the incident on 15 December 2021 by Northern Territory Police Fire Emergency Services," a spokesman said.

The Territory's Education Department did not directly answer whether it was conducting its own investigation into the incident, but said representatives had spoken with the island's land council to "ensure all actions taken by the school are culturally appropriate to meet the community's needs during this time".
