Investigators are looking into whether speed was a factor in the fatal derailment of a passenger train 50 kilometres north of Melbourne.

John Kennedy, 54 and his pilot a 49-year-old Victorian man died when their XPT came off the tracks on a journey from Sydney.

The train carrying 160 passengers was meant to slow down to 15 kilometres to divert through a crossing loop at Wallan before it derailed.
