The International Olympic Committee has defended its stance that it is up to each international sports body to set their own rules for transgender athletes, despite criticism for its lack of leadership.
The issue was brought into focus after swimming's world government body FINA made a historic decision to effectively ban most transgender women from participating in female competitions.
IOC spokesperson Mark Adams defended the committee's decision to allow individual sports to form their own rules. "This will take some time and we have to see what comes forward. It has to be the only solution going forward.""It has to be by sport, and even by discipline," he said.
