Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a lung disease that results in scarring of the lungs, a process known as fibrosis. The disease progresses over a period of several years interfering with the ability to oxygenate the lungs eventually leading to a condition known as hypoxia or lack of oxygen, starving critical organs such as the brain, heart and kidneys of life-sustaining oxygen.
However, in a new approach, researchers demonstrated that blocking a protein called interleukin-11 using therapeutic antibodies can actually reverse the process known as fibrosis in the lung.
Overall, currently available approaches for IPF have not significantly slowed the progression of fibrosis. These include antioxidants , biological response modifiers , endothelin receptor antagonists, or phosphodiesterase inhibitors .
