A Queensland mayor has opened a fake train station in a town that has been waiting 18 years for the real one to be built.
Ipswich City Council has opened a train station to nowhere at Ripley Town Centre as a pre-election stunt. She is demanding the next Queensland government fund the "I2S" fast train service, which she says would allow Ipswich residents to commute to Brisbane CBD in 21 minutes. The I2S has been stuck in the planning stages since 2006 and there is nothing to show for it but scrapped feasibility reports, scoping studies and business cases.
"We want to make sure that that business case doesn't sit on the shelf, it doesn't gather dust, that it actually has money in future budgets to make sure this train line gets built," she said. Ipswich West candidate Wendy Bourne said Labor would retain 50-cent fares, build a new independent transport authority and fix the notorious Amberley intersection.
He said the route would create a University of Southern Queensland station and allow more people to live in Ipswich who could travel to Brisbane for work. "I want to see the state and federal governments move from an idea to commit to this project so we can get cars off the road and encourage people to move to Ipswich."
