The US also argued it was evidence of what it calls its "ironclad" commitment to helping Israel defend itself. That shadow war has been flaring since the October 7 attack, and it shifted to a new level on April 1, when seven people were killed when an Iranian consulate in Syria was flattened by an air strike.
On Sunday morning local time, after Iran declared its attack was all over, both countries declared wins of sorts. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, who also sits on the war cabinet, said Israel now had "an opportunity to establish a strategic alliance against this grave threat by Iran".
