Iran says several foreigners including UK diplomat detained for alleged spying

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have detained several foreigners, including Britain's second most senior envoy in Tehran, for alleged acts of spying including taking soil samples in restricted areas, Iran state television reported. One of the men was identified as the UK government's deputy head of mission in IranIt did not elaborate on when they were arrested or whether they were still under arrest. Britain said the reports were "completely false".

Samuel Heath, UK spokesperson to the United States, tweeted: "He is not even posted in Iran anymore!" The TV report ran footage allegedly showing Mr Walczak and three colleagues collecting earth samples in another area after visiting Iran on a scientific exchange program. State television said that Israel — which staunchly opposes the nuclear agreement — "wants to open a file on the possible military dimension of Iran's nuclear program, using nationals from third countries who are linked to foreign embassies".
