The death of an Iranian colonel will not go unnoticed, Iran warned Monday, as tensions between it and the United States and its allies continue.

Col. Sayyad Khodai of the Iran Revolutionary Guard was shot five times in his car on Sunday, the most high-profile killing inside Iran since the death of nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh in 2020. Khodai's death was blamed by the Revolutionary Guard Corps on “global arrogance,” typically code for the U.S. and the U.S.'s allies, which include Israel, according to Agence France-Presse.

"I insist on the serious pursuit by security officials, and I have no doubt that the blood of this great martyr will be avenged," Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said."There is no doubt that the hand of global arrogance can be seen in this crime."A memorial service for Khodai was scheduled in Tehran on Monday, with his funeral taking place on Tuesday in central Tehran, Iran's capital.

Khodai was killed by two assailants on motorcycles outside of his house as he was returning home. Iran's state prosecutor had visited the scene of the crime and ordered the"quick identification and arrest of the authors of this criminal act," according to the Fars News Agency.

"The dimensions of this assassination are being investigated," a spokesman for the Iranian armed forces said.
