Nila Rezaei and Chris Krainer hope the creations in protest against female oppression will one day be installed in a stadium.

Dozens of unwanted headscarves from women in Iran and across the world have been turned into stadium seats in a symbolic protest against female oppression. Iran ian-Australian designer Nila Rezaei , who moved to Australia in 2012, had just started RK Collective with Christopher Krainer , focused on social impact and sustainability.

As many women stopped wearing a headscarf in public in an act of defiance and freedom, Rezaei and Krainer decided not to let them go to waste."This is a way of protesting in your own way without putting your identity out there or putting yourself in danger," Rezaei says. The designers tossed around different ideas about what to create with them and considered musical instruments or a mirror, before settling on stadium seats.

"What we're doing with headscarves is borrowing a lot of that historical knowledge, we're using textile instead of resin, we're using recycled plastic and tying back to how they used to be made."Rezaei stresses they are not protesting the wearing of headscarves and they carefully avoid using the term 'hijab'.Explaining the hijab: What it means to Muslim women

The opposite is true in Indonesia, where Crafted Liberation was exhibited earlier this year. In the 1980s, women were banned from wearing headscarves, so the reaction to the exhibit was different. Krainer says they feel an obligation to the women who donated their headscarves to maximise exposure, using beautiful photos of each stage of the process posted on social media.
