This week's violence erupted after Mr Sadr said he was withdrawing from all political activity — a decision he said was prompted by the failure of other Shiite leaders and parties to reform the country’s governing system. "The current situation is unacceptable and can’t continue. This is why the holding of early new elections in accordance with a national understanding represents a way out of the stifling crisis in the country," Mr Saleh said.
