Irish punk icon Sinéad O’Connor, who was known for her unique vocals and political protests, such as ripping up a photo of the Pope on live television, has died aged 56.
She was known for her expressive music, her challenge of the conservative Irish state and was outspoken on religion, sex, feminism and war.
Her punk rock spirit and affinity with hip hop artists has been recognised by the outpouring of tributes, with rapper ICE T saying “she stood for something, unlike most people”.She had a tumultuous personal life, most recently she tragically lost of one of her four children, aged 17 to suicide. “He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally.”
