Is alcohol in moderation better for your health than none? Or is that a myth? We decant the latest evidence and what it tells us about the effects of a daily tipple.

say the less alcohol you drink the better, given the risk of diseases like such as breast cancer increases with every drop you drink."They say things like 'You hear a study that it's good for your heart' or 'You hear a study that one or two drinks is OK,'" says Samantha Batchelor, who conducted a study on women's attitudes to drinking as part of a PhD at Torrens University.

Other factors that can skew results in health studies include income levels, genes, smoking and how active people are."But they didn't see a subsequent reduction in coronary heart disease in the US, which is what you would expect if it was actually the wine .""The French paradox, I think, sticks in the public psyche because it's got that sexy back story," Dr Beckett says.

"It makes the non-drinker group look as if they're in bad health because they don't drink," Professor Chikritzhs says. Torrens University PhD student Ms Batchelor says the women in her study consumed alcohol for all kinds of reasons. And immediate reasons for drinking could override longer-term health impacts such as the increased risk of breast cancer, she says."If women particularly are using it as a coping mechanism where they've got very difficult life circumstances, then the risk of what alcohol might be doing to their health down the track is not really of relevance right now.

Dr Beckett says there needs to be an "umbrella review" that brings together all the risks and benefits of alcohol to better inform policy.
