AFL: Saints recruit Paddy Dow says coach Ross Lyon played a large roll in attracting him to the club.

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes has questioned whether high-profile Essendon recruit Ben McKay is prepared for the scrutiny coming his way in 2024.

McKay is set to be the league’s highest-paid player in 2024 with a front-ended contract worth upwards of $1.5 million next season, according to an AFL Media report. It would provide the Bombers with ample salary cap space in 2025 and beyond, but Cornes warned McKay had to be prepared for robust feedback if he didn’t perform at his peak.

“Is he ready for the scrutiny that comes with $1.5 million a year and being the highest paid player? I don’t know if he is,” Cornes said on SEN’s Sportsday.North Melbourne received band one compensation as a result of Essendon’s contract, giving them pick No.3 in this year’s draft. He had a number of suitors before eventually deciding on Essendon as his club of choice.

“Are you comfortable with him earning $1.5 million a year? It’s going to come with some scrutiny. He’s played in eight wins throughout his career, he’s never had a Brownlow Medal vote, rarely if ever top five in their best and fairest ... has had some issues with his body.“We are now at the point where player wages are just becoming public. That is the facts of it and once again we see a report about him earning $1.5 million next year and no one cares.
