The money is, indeed, stupid. Sunday’s victory lifted Scheffler’s career earnings to $57.6 million. It’s the 10th-most all-time, and it’s emblematic of Scheffler’s utter dominance since his first tour win in 2022. Still, he drives the same 2012 GMC Yukon XL that he’s whipped since high school. Scheffler drew laughter in 2022 when, after his first Masters win, he said he’d spend the following day doing yard work.
Just don’t mistake that for complacency or naivety. Chamblee doesn’t see Scheffler “buying a yacht and sailing it into the Mediterranean and calling it a career.” Neither does Smith, who contends that Scheffler is as competitive on tour as he is back at Royal Oaks. There, Smith said, is where he first recognized a difference between Scheffler and the number of other youth golfers the Hall of Famer has coached.
