The 2021 NFL season begins Thursday, with the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosting the NFC East’s defending third-place calamity, the Dallas Cowboys, and I’m telling you right now: This is going to be a long journey. Pace yourselves. Get plenty of sleep. Nap. Stretch.
As Tampa’s 64-year-old quarterback, Tom Brady, would surely advise: hydrate.onto its 16-game regular season, the first such expansion since the league leapt from 14 to 16 in 1978. More is more, and capitalism is certainly capitalism, but I’m not exactly sure what fan base was agitating for this. The NFL is framing 17 as extra action and excitement, but by December, a lot of desultory football cities will want a 17th contest like a labradoodle wants a fireworks finale.
