From canned tuna to Christmas prawns, Australians eat about 400,000 tonnes of seafood every year, but there are some handy resources out there if we want to make more sustainable choices.

Each species is also broken down into its fishery. So for instance, the Queensland snapper fishery is listed as Depleted, whereas New South Wales is Sustainable.While this information is industry approved, the Australian Marine Conservation Society said a more environmentally cautious approach is needed.

"That was due to an ongoing series of serious environmental issues as a result of the industry looking to expand their production farther and faster than the local environment was able to support."
