"I'm very strongly pushing the case with the French, and with any other European country that I'm talking to, that we need a better deal." "In these very uncertain times it's important that you have friends on the world stage and the Europeans should be good friends with us, but at the moment the offer on the table isn't good enough and I'm aiming to get a better one."
A potential free trade deal with the EU has been worked on since at least June 2018, but has faced significant hurdles in the agriculture sector - France has been particularly wary of allowing greater access to the market for Australian products in order to protect its own industry.
