After 15 months of violence that has claimed tens of thousands of Palestinian lives, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire, mediated by Qatar. The deal, announced by Qatar's Prime Minister, is set to take effect on January 19th and includes a phased approach involving hostage releases, a halt to fighting, and increased humanitarian aid for Gaza. While details remain unclear, the initial six-week phase will see limited prisoner exchanges, partial Israeli troop withdrawals, and a surge in aid. Future phases will address the remaining hostages, a permanent ceasefire, and full Israeli troop withdrawal.
Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire deal after 15 months of bloodshed that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and escalated tensions across the Middle East. Qatar's Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani announced on Thursday that the ceasefire deal would come into effect on 19 January but said discussions with Israel and Hamas are still ongoing.
A source close to Hamas said Israeli forces would withdraw from the Netzarim Corridor westward toward Salaheddin Road to the east, enabling displaced people to return through an electronic checkpoint equipped with cameras. "No Israeli forces will be present, and Palestinian militants will be barred from passing through the checkpoint during the return of displaced persons," he said.
