Evacuations of injured people and foreign nationals from the Gaza Strip into Egypt have stopped since Israel's deadly attack on an ambulance on Saturday, and as strikes from Israel continue to hit refugee camps in the enclave.
The strikes come as the US is urging Israel to take a humanitarian pause from its bombardment of Gaza, as the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken makes an unexpected visit to the West Bank to meet with the Palestinian Authority.
The man, his wife and their two young children were among a group of Australians and other foreign nationals who were able to escape Gaza earlier this week.Roughly 1,100 people have left the strip through Rafah since Wednesday."We believe it will this afternoon," a senior US State Department official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "Don't hold me to it," the official added.
"I do worry that in the month that has passed since those atrocities, a kind of moral fog has descended," he said. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the occupied West Bank, in an unannounced visit after Mr Blinken met with Jordanian, Qatari, Egyptian, and other Arab counterparts in the recent days.
Mr Blinken reportedly also told President Abbas that the Palestinian Authority should play a central role in what comes next in the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected calls for a temporary stop, reiterating his position in a visit to an air base today."We say this to both our enemies and our friends. We will continue until we beat them," he added.
