US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Palestinians must be able to self-govern in Gaza, as well as the West Bank, under a unified Palestinian Authority after the war, saying it's 'clear that Israel cannot reoccupy Gaza'. Follow live.
In the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces wounded 19 Palestinians in shooting on Wednesday during a raid on the city of Bethlehem that lasted more than six hours, leaving four people in critical condition, the Palestinian health ministry said.
Vigilante-style settler attacks have killed at least 29 people this year, according to the UN Humanitarian Affairs Office, OCHA.Israel does not intend to "reoccupy" Gaza or control it for a long time, a senior Israeli official said in Washington. It comes after Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu suggested his country would maintain security control of Gaza for an "indefinite period" after its bombardment, which has killed 10,500 people in a month, according to Palestinian health authorities.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres says the number of civilians killed in the Gaza Strip shows that there is something "clearly wrong" with Israel's military operations against Hamas. "If we don't make that distinction, I think it's humanity itself that will lose its meaning," he said. There was no immediate Israeli comment or details from the scene of the reported attack, which if confirmed would be the third on Gaza's largest refugee camp in a week.
But the central and southern parts of the small, besieged Palestinian enclave also came under fire again.
