Tensions between Joe Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu over Israel’s war on Hamas have burst into the open as the two leaders bicker publicly.
A senior Israeli official warned the US administration against working to “bring down” the Israeli coalition government, as relations between President Joe Biden and Mr Netanyahu further deteriorated over rising civilian casualties in the five-month war in Gaza.“Those who elect the prime minister of Israel are the citizens of Israel and no one else,” said the unnamed official in a statement issued to Israeli media, interpreting the US intelligence report as an effort to unseat Mr Netanyahu.
Tensions between Mr Biden and Mr Netanyahu over Israel’s war on Hamas have burst into the open as the two leaders bicker publicly. The US president warned this week an Israeli attack on the southern Gaza city of Rafah would cross a “red line”. Mr Netanyahu appeared to dismiss those concerns in an interview with Politico on Sunday.to bring aid to civilians in Gaza, with food short and relief groups warning of famine amid Israel’s assault.
In a letter to Mr Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders and seven Democrats argued that by continuing to arm Israel, the president was violating the Foreign Assistance Act, which bars military support from going to any nation that restricts the delivery of humanitarian aid.
“ believes there is a path to do that, and that path does not lie in smashing into Rafah, where there are 1.3 million people, in the absence of a credible plan to deal with the population there,” Mr Sullivan said.Senator Sanders said it was clear that Mr Netanyahu’s actions were in breach of the terms of US military aid as set out in the Humanitarian Aid Corridor Act, which is part of the foreign assistance law.
