Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists civilian deaths are inevitable while Hamas uses them as human shields, as Israel rescues one of the many hostages.
| A defiant Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repudiated growing Western pressure for a ceasefire and warned civilian casualties are inevitable while terror group Hamas uses Gazan citizens as human shields., including attacking Hamas militants inside their vast tunnel network, Israel has heeded some international concern and will allow increased humanitarian aid from Wednesday into the Palestinian enclave.
But Israel’s troops pressed deeper into the Gaza Strip, revealing on Tuesday that its forces were fighting Hamas gunmen inside the tunnels, as tanks, bulldozers and armoured vehicles advanced slowly into the enclave. The tunnels are a key objective for Israel as it expands ground operations inside Gaza to wipe out the ruling Hamas group, following its terror attack three weeks ago that killed over 1400 people and resulted in more than 200 people taken as hostages.
Other clips show hostages – shot or suffering broken limbs – being bundled into the back of a truck to be taken to Gaza. Other clips show gunmen executing victims. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese repeated that it is “important to recognise that Israel has a right to defend itself, but how it does that matters”.
Despite the mounting casualties, Mr Netanyahu insisted Israel was “doing everything to get Palestinian civilians out of harm’s way” but Hamas was stopping them leaving at gunpoint. Meanwhile, in a video likely to have been filmed under duress, one of the hostages, identified as Danielle Aloni, blamed Mr Netanyahu for “political and national neglect” over the terror attack, adding “You want to kill us all”.“Ground action actually creates the possibility, not the certainty, but the possibility of getting our hostages out because Hamas will not do it unless they’re under pressure,” Mr Netanyahu said.
