In his first public statement on the fighting in Israel and Gaza, Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi said Tuesday evening that Egypt’s national security is his top priority, “and I will not neglect it under any circumstances.” Egypt has faced pressure from its citizens and foreign governments to allow more people through the Rafah border crossing with Gaza. But Israel has repeatedly struck the crossing over the past 24 hours, impeding its operation.
“The Egyptian people must be aware of the complexities of the situation and cognizant of the magnitude of the threat.” He added that Egypt was ramping up diplomatic efforts to halt the fighting and protect civilians on both sides. Cairo, which maintains contacts with Israel and various Palestinian factions, has played a key role in brokering past cease-fires between Israel and Hamas.
