Israeli authorities have assessed the stabbing of a pilot on a flydubai flight as an attempted terror attack. The Embassy of Israel in Canberra says information uncovered in interrogation, revealed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, shows the co-pilot underwent what they call Islamist radical indoctrination.
Israel's envoy to the UAE has said it was too early to draw conclusions and no motive had been determined. flydubai had said earlier the underlying reasons for the event remained unknown, and warned against premature speculation. In the statement the embassy also said it was relieved all passengers and crew on-board the Dubai to Tel Aviv flight were safe, including an Australian couple.
Three men have been arrested after two women were attacked in separate home invasions in Sydney's south-west over the past week. Police say that in one incident, a group of unknown men forced entry into an Arncliffe home where a 31 year old was allegedly threatened with a knife and sexually assaulted, then targeted a 32 year old's home in Bankstown.
Police allege the 18, 19 and 20 year old men are suspected of planning to target a third person last night, but investigations are ongoing. Sex Crimes Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Virginia Gorman says the men were "excessively violent" in the attacks that were carried out, coming armed with a knife and duct taping the women.
"You don't need to do that to overcome a solo female. The violence was over-the-top for what they've done. They have minor physical injuries. Physical injuries can be overcome easily, it's the mental injuries of having a person invade your home and do that kind of violence to you that will be a long time for them to recover from.
" The Assistant Minister for Citizenship has used a major speech to condemn migration lawyers who give what he has called 'false hope' to clients hoping to settle in Australia. Julian Hill has told the National Migration Conference that the government intends to ban migration agents who exploit vulnerable applicants for protection visas.
The Minister has told the gathering that it regards migration as important for Australia's social and economic prosperity, denying its new approach is designed to combat the rising popularity of One Nation. He says the government just wants to do something about people taking advantage of the current scheme.
"Australia is and will remain extremely kind and generous to genuine asylum seekers, and part of the social licence to do so for most Australians is to reduce the abuse of the onshore system. And currently the latest data shows that around 90 percent of protection applications are refused at primary stage as non-genuine, with a similar amount refused on appeal.
" Six samples sent for bird flu testing have returned negative results after the discovery of large numbers of dead ibises in the lake at the centre of Bendigo. Wildlife rescuers say, as of yesterday, they'd counted almost 60 carcasses at Lake Weeroona, and haven't been able to access the island today ] to check for more.
Bendigo Wildlife Rescue volunteer Avery Barnett-Dacey says rescuers have been cleared to work in the area, but don't have capacity to remove the carcasses. The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action says it has workers on site, and the local council says further testing is underway.
"We know that there's still birds that are dying down there. We've had reports coming in today of more birds dying. So I feel like that the number's going to increase. I'd hope to see some kind of government action, some support in removing the carcasses so that the space can be safe.
If we've got 60 dead birds slowly decaying in the water and on the water's edge, then it's going to create another health risk of botulism, which will then further impact all the reptiles, all the other aquatic life, and all the other birds that call Lake Weeroona home.
" Four new astronauts have arrived at the International Space Station after launching on an eight-hour express that has set a United States speed record. The fresh arrivals include a Canadian whose wife will give birth while he's away, and commander Jessica Watkins, who is the first black woman to lead a crew to orbit. NASA's Low Earth Orbit program manager, Dana Weigel, says the new crew will undertake some important research during their six month deployment.
"They'll do some research with human stem cell derived tissues. It's got a lot of disease modelling and pharmaceutical applications. And the hope with, I'd say this general field of research is that we can target cures whether it's pharmaceutical treatments or figuring out how a disease actually really activates. What we can target treatments for things like heart disease, ALS, Parkinson's.
"Heeney had been one of the five players stood down from August to the end of the Swans' finals campaign, for breaching club standards following a post-AFL match party at the Pullman Hotel in East Melbourne.
