The Albanese government is being lobbied heavily over whether to support a symbolic vote upgrading Palestine to full membership of the UN.
Already a subscriber?Palestine’s local envoy wants Australia to break with the US and support Palestinian membership of the United Nations, saying this would demonstrate global leadership and acknowledge the sentiment of local Muslims.
Palestine already has observer status at the UN and Friday’s vote is largely symbolic because the UN Security Council needs to approve full membership. Last month, the US used its veto to thwart the bid, despite 12 of the 15 Security Council members backing the proposal.The draft resolution essentially asks all 193 General Assembly members to urge the Security Council to reconsider Palestinian membership.
Mr Abdulhadi said it would be disappointing if Australia abstained. He said this would leave the Palestinian leadership with the perception Australia was paying lip service to their suffering. Mr Abdulwadi, who belongs to rival political party Fatah, said if Hamas wanted to join the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, it would have to accept the two-state solution and non-violence.
