The MSO is scrambling to review itself after its musicians called for the sacking of the managing director and chief operating officer following a guest pianist’s cancellation for onstage Gaza comments.

Already a subscriber?Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has deleted the names of its managers and directors from its website and closed its call centre to inbound calls as the crisis around its cancellation of a pianist for making statements about the Israel-Palestine conflict deepens.

Such vitriol had come to be expected in an arts scene bitterly divided by the Gaza war, according to Jewish musician Ben Adler, of“It would appear that, for some, today, the mere fact of us being publicly Jewish and caring about our friends and family in Israel – like the vast majority of Jews – is now ‘political’,” he said. Many of the Facebook commenters called for the sacking of MSO’s management.

The board also includes former Qantas chair Margaret Jackson, former Victorian government minister Martin Foley, banker Farrel Meltzer and a Myer family scion, funds manager Edgar Myer.Such is the viciousness of the culture war being waged alongside the real war in Gaza that few public arts figures are willing to speak out.

Adler said he and his Chutney bandmates no longer communicated with several former friends and collaborators because of bitter disagreements over the war.
