It is long overdue that Australia and its Western allies demonstrate solidarity with the people of both Iran and Israel and list Iran’s IRGC as a terrorist organisation.

. Australia and like-minded democracies must act – and there is one clear and concrete action they can take.

Indeed, Iran has emerged as the only clear winner from last weekend’s orgy of sickening violence, mass slaughter and hostage-taking.In addition to confronting the sheer magnitude of innocent lives lost, Israel will have to grapple with the ramifications of an intelligence failure of near-incomprehensible scale, a seismic blow to its military deterrence, and the inevitable political shockwaves that will buffer Benjamin Netanyahu’s already-beleaguered government.

Just last week, Hamas’ Lebanon representative was photographed in Tehran alongside Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. IRGC-linked social media accounts reposted Hamas videos of the kidnapping of Israeli civilians within minutes of these assaults taking place.A Hamas spokesman told the BBC that the group had received direct backing from Iran for the attack, and thehas reported that the IRGC and Hamas finalised attack plans the week before at a rendezvous in Lebanon.

Antisemitism and an almost pathological hatred of Israel are core tenets of IRGC ideology. Other than perhaps Israel itself, no country has done more to radicalise the Palestinian cause than Iran, and no organisation has had a greater hand in propagating Palestinian terrorism than the IRGC.The horrifying events of the past week are not only rooted in Iran’s decades-long investments in Palestinian terror groups.

One of the few foreign policy decisions the Trump administration got right was adding the IRGC to the United States’ terror list in 2019. This was accompanied by meaningful efforts to crack down on the IRGC’s sophisticated program of sanctions evasion, which had enabled them to sell Iranian oil on the lucrative black market to fund their intervention in regional wars and support terrorist clients in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Palestine.
