Benjamin Netanyahu has broken his silence today - to ask those protesting in Israel to"behave responsibly".
The disruption was launched in a bid to persuade Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to abandon plans to reform the judiciary and give greater powers to ministers.Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall There have been leaks coming out of the coalition suggesting that various key members would support Netanyahu if he declared that there would be a halt – a pause – in the legislative proceedings.
Saying that, it's really now very hard to see what other option he has. Things have been moving at pace today."As we reported earlier, a general strike was launched earlier across Israel, with airports, seaports and schools and colleges thrown into chaos. A sea of Israeli flags made its way through the holy city in the last few hours, with others holding signs and banging drums.Yariv Levin, the Israeli justice minister, has said he would respect any decision Benjamin Netanyahu makes about the future of his judicial reform proposals."A situation in which everyone does as they wish is liable to bring about the instant fall of the government and collapse of the [ruling party] Likud," Mr Levin said.
