Australia joins Canada, Sweden and the European Union in restoring funding for the organisation after at least 12 countries froze payments in January.

Already a subscriber? The Executive Council of Australian Jewry has slammed the Albanese government for unfreezing $6 million for the UN’s Palestinian aid agency, warning taxpayer-funded aid is at risk of being commandeered by terrorists.

The deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where an estimated 1.7 million people have been displaced, and aid agencies claim people are dying from starvation because Israel is turning supply trucks away, has raised pressure on governments to find aid pathways. “It’s unquestionable that UNRWA workers actively participated in the atrocities committed on 7th October against innocent Israeli civilians and were also part of the Hamas organisational structure,” he said.

“It has been demonstrated that UNRWA employees, including schoolteachers, participated in the Hamas massacre of October 7 and many others have collaborated with Hamas in other ways. They are indeed terrorists even if the organisation for which they work is not designated as such. “The reckless decision to resume UNRWA funding now risks both inadvertently assisting Hamas, a banned terrorist group, and undermining Australia’s own foreign policy goals for the Middle East.

“Instead, what we have is a reckless approach and an irresponsible approach by the Albanese government that does leave the risk there in terms of how Australian taxpayer dollars are used,” he said.”No Australian dollar should ever be made available to any organisation or people who may use it to support, incite, or undertake terrorist acts.“
