Mr Thistlewaite, who serves as an MP for an area that includes Coogee Beach, says his thoughts are with the woman who is now receiving treatment at St Vincent Hospital. Mr Thistlewaite also paid tribute to a paddleboarder who rushed to pull the woman away from the shark.
"Particularly Charlie Verco, a life saver from Bondi, who's out here training for the Molokai Ski Race, and he acted quickly, he risked his own life to get the woman onto his surf skit to bring her to the shore as quickly as possible. "Police say they're exploring all possibilities in an investigation into the deaths of a father and his six-year-old daughter.
The pair's bodies were recovered from the Parramatta River near Concord in Sydney on Saturday, after police were first called to reports of a man in the water and later launched a search for the missing girl.
